Minnesota, the rise in autism rates coincided with a broader criteria for autism, so that children who may have before been given a diagnosis of mental retardation or developmental delay are now given the diagnosis of autism. This two-minute video clip examines the issue. Many experts now believe that autism is not caused by one particular thing, but rather, is a constellation of causes and possibly genetics. Dr. Steven Wolf, Medical Director of Pediatric Epilepsy at Beth Israel Medical Center, says, "I think what's happened is we've gotten smarter and we have become more aware as parents and we've become more better advocates."
